A DELEGATION of the United Nations headed by its Under Secretary General Sir John Holmes visited Vavuniya on 18th November 2009.
During their visit, the delegation went to the Manik Farm Welfare Village and met patients, lying in hospital inside the village and also saw the exhibition of garments and handicrafts produced by the women living in the Manik Farm. They also shared views with civilians in the Manik Farm Welfare Village.
Commander Security Forces (Wanni), Major General Kamal Gunarathne, Brigadier General Staff – Security Forces (Wanni), Brigadier S Ranasinghe and several other senior officers of the Security Forces Headquarters (Wanni) and District Secretary, Vavuniya Mrs P.S.M. Charles also participated in the tour.
Later this delegation flew to Mannar with Major General Kamal Gunarathne and saw ongoing de-mining programme conducted by the Army and UN agencies. The delegation also inspected the landmines and explosives that have been recovered by the Army.
