Troops Reap Organic Paddy Harvest in Anuradhapura

A simple, yet traditional ceremony, held in Anuradhapura on Tuesday (30) reaped the paddy harvest, sown by Army troops of the Forward Maintenance Area - North Central (FMA - NC) using organic fertilizer to be in line with the government’s food promotion project.

Those troops earlier in May this year using organic fertilizer took the initiative of sowing paddy in an abandoned marshy patch of two acres on a direction given by Major General M.E.P Weerasinghe, Commander, FMA - NC in an attempt to support the food cultivation drive of the Army.

On 30 August, Major General M.E.P Weerasinghe and his troops after observance of harvesting rites and rituals in accordance with age-old traditions began reaping the paddy harvest, comprised of Samba, Basmathi and Ran Kahawanu varieties of paddy.

Ven. Eethalawetunuwewe Gnanathilaka Thero, Chief Incumbent at Mirisawatiya and Chancellor of Rajarata University who visited the paddy harvesting ceremony invoked blessings on the efforts.

Colonel Waruna Perera, Colonel FMA-NC and the environmentalist, Mr. Kumudu Gunawardane, Director, Pragathisewa Foundation were also associated with the day’s event.
