Troops Clean up Gurunagar Beach Patch

To coincide with the Earth Day (22 April), troops of the 51 Infantry Division of the Security Force Headquarters - Jaffna (SFHQ-J) launched a beach cleaning project along the coastal belt of Gurunagar in Jaffna.

The beach patch, littered with discarded wrappers, polythene, plastic bottles, empty cans and other pollutants remained badly-polluted when the troops attracting community participation began the project on Monday (24).

The project coordinated by the District Secretariat, Jaffna and Marine Environment Protection Authority was meant to create an attitudinal awakening of the general public in order to educate them on the importance of coastal and marine resources and their conservation.

Accordingly, a large number of Army troops along with Navy, Police, Scouts and civilians in respective areas joined hands in order to make the project a huge success.

Mr. A. Sivabalasundran, District Secretary for Jaffna, Major General D.B.S.N Bothota RWP RSP VSV USP psc, Commander, SF-J, Major General S.W.B Welagedara RSP VSV USP ndc, General Officer Commanding, 51 Infantry Division, Senior Officers, Officers, Other Ranks, Navy and Air Force personnel, state officials and employees and students took part in the programme.
