Trained Mine Detecting Dogs &;amp; Handlers Receive Certificates


Sniffing dogs, donated by US State Department to the government for use in Sri Lanka Army Engineers’ de-mining work, received their training certificates, together with 16 of their dog handlers on Wednesday (16) during a brief ceremony at Security Forces Headquarters, Wanni.

The mine detecting training course for both dogs and Army handlers was conducted by Mr Adis Pelto of the US as a gesture of goodwill, extended to the Army. The training for five dogs and sixteen trainees took nearly five months.

The certificate awarding ceremony was attended by US officials, Mrs Elise Backer, Mrs Tycie Hovsley, Mr John Head, Mr Monti Ranatunge, Director, National Mine Action Centre, Mr Kapila Perera, Regional Mine Action Officer, Vavuniya and Brigadier D.G Karunaratne, Brigade Commander, Engineer Brigade. The course conducted at Engineer Brigade Headquarter started on 28th June 2011.
