They did it Differently for their 50th Wedding Anniversary; Disable War Hero Receives New House

KANDY-BASED Mr S.D. Gunarathne and Mrs Vimala Gunarathne, who were to mark their 50th wedding anniversary by end of February chose a different modus operandi this time to show that ‘example’ was better than ‘advice’ after their three sons too extended their blessings to the noble ideal.

Considering the plight of the partially disable Lance Corporal D.M Dissanayake of 3 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment who fell victim to an ambush laid by Tiger terrorists in Nelliady, Jaffna on 1st September 2007 and lost one eye and hearing as a result, Mr and Mrs S.D. Gunarathne with the support of their sons, Jagath (USA), Priyanka (Canada) and Shanaka decided to build a new house to the partly disable War Hero, Lance Corporal Dissanayake to coincide with their 50th wedding anniversary. The War Hero’s wife, Mrs Anoma Dissanayake with their school-going children is permanently compelled to support her husband all throughout since there was no other alternative available for his survival.

The project for construction of a new house was completed within 70 days with the support received from Lieutenant Colonel W.T.M.P.S. Bandara, Commanding Officer 3 (V) Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment, Captain Asitha Ranathillake, Adjutant 3 SLSR, Mr Sarath Perera, Nalin Dissanayake and Mrs Tharangani Dissanayake.

Sponsors of the project, the Gunarathnes were able to meet their aspirations on the day of their 50th wedding anniversary (28th February 2010). The Gunarathnes with their sons, daughters in law, Lalanthika and Manel and a host of kinsmen of the Gunarathnes, well-wishers were present at Kiribathkumbura to give away the wedding anniversary gift, the house worth Rs. 15 lakhs plus household items and equipment valued at Rs. 5 lakh. The victimized War Hero’s 3 (V) SLSR battalion came forward to foot the expenditure for water and electrification of the house as fellow War Heroes in 3 (V) SLSR volunteered to donate their labour for construction.

The simple ceremony that coincided the marriage anniversary with the award of the newly built house for the War Hero took place Sunday (28) morning. Chief Guest for the occasion was Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, President Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB) who handed over the parchment containing house titles and the deed.

The ceremony started with a welcome speech delivered by Mrs Rani Jayathilaka, President Sinha Regiment Seva Vanitha Unit. After the speech, the Chief Guest and senior officers attending the ceremony lit the traditional oil lamp and inaugurated the house by cutting a ribbon at auspicious time. Several monks invited for the occasion chanted Seth Pirith and blessed the inauguration. An alms giving for ten Buddhist monks also followed after inauguration of the new house.

This rare occasion was graced by Major General Amitha Obeysekara, Deputy Commandant Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force, Major General W.L.C.D.B Rajaguru, Commander Security Forces Kilinochchi, Major General Mano Perera, Commander II Division, officers and other ranks at Sinha Regiment and all Sinha Regiment Seva Vanitha Unit members.
