SVAB House Construction Projects Expanded, Giving Away More Houses to War Heroes

The Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB), one of the major driving forces that helps War Heroes realize their dream of moving into newly-built standard houses, in another landmark mammoth welfare project on Friday (14), distributed financial grants, land blocks, new houses and home accessories among 57 War Heroes of the Army to the value of Rs 26 million under this phase.

To this date, the SVAB in its multi-faceted projects such as award of 1000 scholarships (Rs 20 million), construction of new houses / completion of houses, etc (Rs 120 million), contribution to both completed wellness resorts (Abimansala) (Rs 400 million), provision of medical assistance (Rs 5 million), medical equipment (Rs 10 million), foreign medical consultations (Rs 5 million) have been completed for the benefit of War Heroes and their families after raising funds through local and foreign expatriates, musical and entertainment projects, public fairs, beauty culture and fashion show projects, production of yoghurts, Seva Vanitha welfare shops, paper recycling project, workshops, etc.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army at the invitation of Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, President, SVAB as the Chief Guest in the distribution ceremony at Army Headquarters, gave away these most vital residential amenities to those next of kin of fallen War Heroes / disable War Heroes and War Heroes still in service.

Today’s ceremony saw three deeds for land slots, 12 new houses, 23 partly-completed houses, financial grants of Rs 1 lakh to 16 War Heroes, monetary grants of Rs 7 lakhs to families of two fallen officers, distributed in the presence of a large gathering of senior officers, next of kin of War Heroes and distinguished invitees. Among the recipient of Rs 1 lakh was one Mrs Mohammadu Casim Seinambu, the widow of Lance Corporal M.H. Yacub of 14 Sri Lanka National Guard Regiment who laid his life in Kinniya as humanitarian operations were on.     

In addition, five technically modified special wheelchairs, needed for the exceptional use of dependent War Heroes at ‘Abimansala’ (wellness resorts), plus a sum of Rs 5 lakhs towards construction of ‘Abimansala - 3’ at Pangolla, were also handed over to the Commander on the same occasion by Mrs Rajitha Jayasuriya, a senior SVAB member on behalf of the donor, Mr Thanuj Gunawardena.

Adding more significance to the day’s event, the Commander during the ceremony handed over a stock of gel socks and physical training accessories to the ‘Abimansala - 2’ at Wilpitawatta, Kamburupitiya, where some 50 -52 dependent War Heroes are undergoing rehabilitation, rest and recreation.

Meanwhile, Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) and its Seva Vanitha Unit, showing their gesture of cooperation and encouragement towards construction of wellness resorts for disable War Heroes in the north western province, donated a sum of Rs 2.5 million to the Commander during the proceedings. Following suit, Sri Lanka Signal Corps (SLSC) Seva Vanitha Unit also gave away a cheque to the value of Rs 1 million for construction of the new ‘Abimansala - 3’ at Pangolla, Kurunegala, still in progress.

Among recipients of those welfare gestures were the close relatives of fallen War Hero, Lieutenant Colonel D.A.U.M. Ranasinghe of Sri Lanka National Guard (SLNG) Regiment who made the supreme sacrifice in Welioya area while engaged in the humanitarian operations. His widow, Mrs B.M. Nilanthi Kumari received the deed of a land block, worth about Rs 4 million from Mattegoda area plus a sum of Rs 7 lakhs for erection of a new house.

Around the same time, Mrs W.M.B.S. Wanninayake Kumari, the widow of Major W.M.B.S Wanninayake of Sri Lanka Signal Corps (SLSC) who laid his life during humanitarian operations in Vishuamadu area, too received a Rs 4 million worth land block, plus Rs 7 lakhs in cash for construction of a new house of their own.

Totally disable War Hero, Corporal K.M. Anil Shantha who sustained serious injuries during humanitarian operations was one among the recipients of SVAB donated land blocks during the same ceremony on Friday (14).

The ceremony’s vote of thanks was delivered by Mrs A.M. Kumudu Kumari, widow of Corporal S.S. Karunaratne who made the supreme sacrifice in Kilinochchi. She received Rs 7 lakhs for construction of her house during the event.    

The SVAB at the forefront of raising funds for welfare of War Hero families, War Heroes’ kids and children, disable War Heroes and serving War Heroes, to its credit, has been conducting multifarious welfare projects while operating at different levels. Of them, its banner project, ‘Brave Hearts’ for collection of funds to wellness resorts and construction of houses under different phases, emerge prominent and most noteworthy under the auspices of Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, President, SVAB.

SVAB senior members, next of kin of War Heroes including children, senior officers, donors and a large gathering witnessed the day’s event.
