SVAB Goes to Kurunegala, Resolves Issues of Disable War Heroes of VIR and SLNG

The Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB), intending to resolve issues pertaining to war-affected disable War Heroes, had its ‘mobile service’ arrangement at Regimental Headquarters of Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) in Boyagane, Kurunegala on Monday (4).

Mrs. Manjulika Jayasuriya, President SVAB accompanied by some senior members of the SVAB attended the mobile service. On arrival, SVAB President was warmly welcomed by VIR Seva Vanitha Unit President, Mrs. Preethi Samaratunge. As a tribute to the fallen War Heroes 2 minutes silence was observed before the commencement of days work.  Commanding Officer of the Headquarters Battalion VIR Lieutenant Colonel Dhananjaya Aluwihare delivered the welcome speech and presented the progress of projects carried out by Seva Vanith VIR unit and VIR Regiment for the welfare of the War Heroes.
 
Thereafter Mrs. Manjulika Jayasuriya President SVAB awarded scholarships of Rs.10,000/= each to 15 children of disable War Heroes.

VIR Seva Vanitha Unit donated Rs. 450,000/= for the furnishing of Abimansala, the wellness resort for the totally dependant disable War Heroes and another Rs. 100,000/= for the building project of SVAB at Ranaviru Sevana. Mrs. Preethi Samarathunge made the donations on behalf of VIR Seva Vanitha Unit.

Rs. 5 million collected as profit from the recently held motor racing event, Vijayabahu Motor Cross was also donated for the construction of Abimansala and the donation was handed over to Mrs. Manjulika Jayasuriya by Colonel of the Regiment Brigadier R. V. Samarathunge.

The mobile service at Boyagane awarded more than 300 VIR disable Officers and Other Ranks the chance of directly meeting most senior officers from the Army Directorate of Welfare, Directorate of Additional Welfare, Directorate of Medical Services, Directorate of Rehabilitation, Directorate of Pay & Records and a few other wings in the Army of direct relevance and concern to them in order to find solutions for their burning issues on the spot without sticking to time-consuming formalities.

Several disable War Heroes attending the occasion sought assistance for the speedy grant of Army loans that have been applied by them but still in waiting while several disable War Heroes aired their grievances on planned completion of their partly-built houses and non-availability of either an own house or a plot of land to call for themselves.

Mrs. Jayasuriaya who gave patient hearing to those disable War Heroes throughout the day identified and evaluated their problems and promised them speedy action as most of the decision-makers in the Army were also associated with the day’s arrangement at Boyagane. The occasion also permitted those disable War Heroes to find counseling and different guidelines for various problems in their personal home fronts, educational sphere of their children, social and cultural issues, health care, etc.

On the same occasion, Mrs. Jayasuriya, promptly responding to several requirements such as completion of partly-thatched roofs, purchase of water pumping machines or plastic water tanks, etc gave an undertaking to do the needful as soon as possible on behalf of the SVAB with the support of donors and philanthropists in the civil sector.
 
Following the conclusion of the day’s mobile service, Mrs Jayasuriya took time off to further interact with disable War Heroes after visiting various projects being carried out by them at the Battalion Headquarters premises. Those War Heroes at present are engaged in projects such as production of concrete bricks, milk related products including yoghurt, clay pots, coir items inclusive of brooms, ropes and jute bags, etc

Mrs. Manjulika Jayasuriya becomes the first SVAB President to visit the VIR Regimental Headquarters since its inception. Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya rewrote the VIR Regimental history when he visited the Boyagane VIR Headquarters early this year being the first Commander of the Army to visit the camp.

A similar SVAB Mobile Service was conducted at the Regimental Headquarters of Sri Lanka National Guard (SLNG) at Wehera, Kurunegala the following day (5) to resolve problems of War Heroes of the SLNG.

Commanding Officer of the Headquarter Battalion SLNG gave a brief account of past and ongoing welfare activities for War Heroes conducted by the Regiment and the Seva Vanitha Unit.

President of SLNG Seva Vanitha Unit Mrs. Deepika Wickramasinghe handed over house hold items worth Rs.3.6 million to Mrs. Manjulika Jayasuriya as a donation to Abimansala during this event.
