Sri Lanka Army IED Experts Groom Maldivian Officers for EOD Operations in Male

The Instructor Team of Sri Lanka Army's, Corps of Engineers, deployed at Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Headquarters in the central Kadhdhoo Island at Laamu Atoll, Maldives following the MNDF invitation successfully concluded the Bomb and Improvised Explosive Device Disposal Training Basic Course (BIEDDT) they conducted in the Maldives on Wednesday (18).

Grooming 35 well-qualified Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) and Improvised Explosive Device Disposal (IEDD) Operators including three Officers and thirty-two Other Ranks representing various service wings in the MNDF, the ten-week long comprehensive training module came to a draw.

The Course was designed to train and enhance the skills and potentials of EOD and IEDD Operators enabling them to undertake independent IEDD and EOD Operations. Lieutenant Abdulla Shahid of Coastal Guard excelled in the Course emerged as the first in order of merit securing aggregate marks over 82 percent.

The Commander MNDF Central Area Colonel Mohamed Ibrahim graced the closing ceremony as the Chief Guest and the Commander Ordnance Service MNDF, Colonel Mohamed Shareef represented Chief of the Defence Force (CDF).

The Chief Guest during his keynote address greatly appreciated the training assistance, extended by the Sri Lanka Army and its Corps of Engineers and thanked the Commander of the Army for the cooperation.

Further, he appreciated the role of the Colonel Commandant Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers for the invaluable training opportunity given. A large gathering of senior Officers including staff of the Headquarters MNDF Central area and Other Ranks of MNDF were present at the closing ceremony.

Upon completion of the BIEDDT, Basic Course, the seven-week long Advanced Course will commence for 24 more military students in the first week of January 2020. The ten-member Instructors Team is headed by Lieutenant Colonel Chandana Wickramanayake, Colonel Project, Engineer Brigade Headquarters of the Sri Lanka Army.

The Exercise code-named "Ex-Amaan Hahdhunmathi" designed for integration of EOD and IEDD mock Operations to secure the besieged Laamu Atoll marked the culmination of the BIEDDT Basic Course.

The students’ performances were found commendable during the execution of the Exercise as an independent group of EOD and IEDD members and also as team commanders.
