Special ‘Hindu’ Pooja Invokes Blessings on Army Anniversary

The sacred ‘Abishekam’ Pooja, a religious ritual in Hinduism, held at Sri Ponnambalam Vaneshwarar Kovil, Colombo 13 on Wednesday (4) afternoon invoked blessings on the forthcoming 68th Army Day (Oct 10).

The 'Abishekam' Pooja ceremony, organized by Sri Lanka Army Hindu Association, symbolically blessed the Army Flag after taking it into the inner chamber of the Kovil, amidst religious rites and rituals.

The day’s Chief Guest, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake was welcomed by Brigadier Shantha Thirunaukarisu, Chairman, Army Hindu Association on arrival.

Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, Commander of the Army as the Chief Guest in the religious ceremony handed over the Army flag to the clergy for blessings as the ceremony was on.

The chief priest (Kurukkal) in accordance with Hindu traditions bestowed blessings on the Army and prayed for its well-being and longevity. A ten-member team of Hindu priests led by Chief Kurukkal Rev Suresh Sharma performed the Pooja.

The traditional ‘Abishekam’ Pooja, comprised of offer of fruits, ghee and other offerings is regarded as one of the most divine rituals in Hinduism.

This special ceremony of Hindu religious rites and rituals was coordinated by the Army Hindu Association, in consultation with the Chief Priest, Kurukkal Rev Suresh Sharma at this ancient temple. Major General Amal Karunasekara, Chief of Staff, several Senior Officers and Other Rankers joined the prayer sessions.
