SLMA's State of the Art New Library Opened

Giving an enhanced academic exposure to the seat of military training, Sri Lanka Military Academy (SLMA) at Diyatalawa, the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya on Saturday (29) opened the new library complex, constructed at a cost of  Rs 23 million.

The state of the art new library that provides reading facilities to more than 100 student officers was constructed following advice given by the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya who himself was a former Commandant at SLMA several years ago.

This new library believed to be one of the best in the South Asian Region is equipped with a separate reference wing and includes a special VIP room with most modern technical facilities that enable one to enter library database within seconds.

The administration of the library is entitled to directly receive any new military volumes from the publishers.

The labour provided by Army Engineer troops for this construction saved about Rs 20 million for the Army, since it has been originally estimated to cost Rs 40 million.

The new library, an extension to the existing old one has been designed with a unique architectural blueprint with the natural lighting system and is equipped with a learning support centre which has facilities for any audio/visual presentations. It is to be fully automated soon and has a spacious reception hall.

The Commander of the Army donated stock of books to the new library on the same occasion along with other donors including the University of Sabaragamuwa.

The foundation stone laid for the construction in March this year by the former SLMA Commandant Brigadier J.R Kulathunga was brought to a successful completion by the incumbent Commandant at SLMA Brigadier P.W.B Jayasundara.
