SLEME Crowned as Army Inter Regiment Wrestling Champs


The Army Inter Regiment Wrestling Tournament-2015 that got off the ground on the close supervision of Major General Sudantha Ranasinghe, Commander, Security Force Headquarters - Kilinochchi (SFHQ-KLN), concluded at Nelum Piyasa, Kilinochchi on 28 August amid a gathering of wrestling fans.  

A total of 10 Regimental teams, comprised of 116 wrestlers (86 male and 20 female) competed for supremacy in the four-day tournament, organized by the Sri Lanka Army Wrestling Association, chaired by Major General Sudantha Ranasinghe.

This was the second tournament conducted by referees and national-level players in the Army. A total of 9 referees/ judges contributed to the successful conduct of the tournament and the finals were held on 28 August.

The tournament, conducted as per the rules and regulations of the Sri Lanka Wrestling Association and the International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles (FILA).

Major General Channa Goonetilleke, Commandant, Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF) graced the finals as the Chief Guest.

Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (SLEME) wrestlers were adjudged as Champions while Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) became the runners-up. In the women’s category, 5(V) Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (SLAWC) became the champions while 4 (V) SLAWC selected the runners-up place.

Craftsman Y.P.S. Chathuranga of 9 SLEME became the Best Wrestler while Private A.C.M.S.K. Senevirathne of 9 Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) was adjudged the Best Loser in the tournament. Private S.P.S. Niroshini of 6 (V) SLAWC clinched the Best Female Wrestler award while Private W.D.G.I.M. Samanthilake of 5 (V) SLAWC became the Best Female Loser in the tournament.

The Chief Guest, Chairman, Sri Lanka Army Wrestling Association and other invitees gave away the trophies to the winners and runners-up.
