SLAGSC Bags Army Inter Regiment Kabaddi Championship


Well contested Kabaddi encounter in the Army at the last moment of the tussle recorded victory to the Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps (SLAGSC) against its equally competent rivals, last year’s Champions Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) during Army’s Inter Regiment Kabaddi Tournament finals on Wednesday (16).

Wednesday’s finals were witnessed by the Commandant of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force and Colonel of the Regiment, Sri Lanka Engineers Major General A. W. J. C. de Silva who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest at the invitation of Major General E.M.M Ambanpola, Chairman, Army Kabaddi Committee.

 The Kabaddi tournament, competed by 17 Regiments and 7 Women Units continued last week for five consecutive days at Panagoda Army Cantonment. It was conducted under four categories; ‘A’ Division, ‘B’ Division, Super League and Women’s event.

Engineer Service Regiment (ESR) emerged the 2nd runners-up in the Super League.

In the meantime, Sri Lanka National Guard (SLNG) emerged Champions in the ‘A’ Division while Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) and Sri Lanka Engineers (SLE) secured second and third slots respectively.  

The ‘B’ Division competition produced Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps (SLAOC) as champions. Sri Lanka Army Service Corps (SLASC) became runners-up.   

3 Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (3 SLAWC), 2 SLAWC and 4 SLAWC carried away trophies for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in the women’s category.

Private Vardhana T. D. of SLAGSC was adjudged the Best Player in men’s category. Private Sampath W. A. L. of SLAGSC was adjudged the Best Defender in the tournament while Corporal  Siriwardane R. T. D. of SLLI became the Best Attacker.  In the women’s category, Private Wijethunge W. M. of 2 SLAWC, Private Upeksha K. T. of 2 SLAWC and Private Padmasiri V. L. of 3 SLAWC were adjudged Best Player, Best Defender and Best Attacker respectively.

The Championship Trophy as well as merit awards and shields to the Best Six players in both teams were presented by Major General A. W. J. C. de Silva, at the conclusion of the ceremony.
