SLA Sportsmen Win Third Triathlon Championship - 2018

The induction of the Army’s third triathlon championship - 2018, involving Swimming, Cycling and Running simultaneously over various distances continuously took place on Monday (9) on the sea beach at Senigama in Hikkaduwa.

The competition was organized by the Army Athletic Committee on the directions given by the Commander of the Army.

Major General Sudath Perera, Chairman, Army Athletic Committee graced the sports event as the Chief Guest and was welcomed by Brigadier Nishantha Ranaweera, Secretary to the Army Athletic Committee at the commencement of the sports event.

This tripartite game was comprised of the 750 m swimming event, 20 Km cycling event and the 5 Km running event.

A total of 66 Army personnel competed in the triathlon representing sportsmen of 13 Regiments in the Army.

The championship of the event was secured by the Sri Lanka Artillery and the Runners-up was the Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps. Each of those two teams consisted of 10 sportsmen and both teams received trophies from the Chief Guest.

3 individuals were adjudged as the best performance in each event of Swimming, Cycling and Running received medals as tokens of appreciation of their achievements in the third annual trial competition.

Lance Corporal P.J.A.L Perera of the Sri Lanka Signal Corps (SLSC) secured the individual championship while Corporal A.M.N.H Abeysinghe of the Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police (SLCMP) and Private H.B.A Chandrasiri of the Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps (SLAOC) respectively secured the Second and Third places.

A triathlon is a multiple-stage competition, involving the completion of three continuous and sequential endurance disciplines. While many variations of the sport exist, triathlon, in its most popular form, involves swimming, cycling, and running in immediate succession over various distances.

The competition was organized with a view to moulding a distinctive team of sportsmen for the Army sports pool to grip the challenges of any future eventualities in the sport arena.

Major General Sudath Perera, Chairman, Army Athletic Committee and General Officer Commanding, 58 Division awarded certificates and trophies to the winners.
