Sinhala Soldier Ties Nuptial Knots with Tamil Bride

Tamil and Sinhala parents, relatives, workmates and well-wishers of Lance Corporal Ranjith Amarasena of 11 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) and Ms Raghu Tharmila of Savalkadu, Sudumalai in Jaffna, got together at the popular ‘Thalsevana’ Holiday Resort in Jaffna on Wednesday (20) to witness the zenith of a romance that resulted in a rare wedding ceremony.

Transgressing all boundaries of ethnic or religious differences, this soldier, Lance Corporal Ranjith fell in love with her fiancée, Ms Raghu when they met about one year ago soon after their first accidental encounter while he was serving Jaffna, but it took several months to find articulation to their future ambition since both hail from two different ethnic backgrounds.

However, both of them succeeded in getting consent of their parents for nuptial knots and finally got the wedding ceremony organized with the full support of the Commander, Security Force Headquarters, Jaffna (SFHQ-J), Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe.

Seen the event as a symbol of the fast growing reconciliatory moves and a gesture that could further promote ethnic harmony, the parents of the soldier, along with a large gathering of next of kin from Thambuttegama, joined parents of the bride in the presence of Hindu Kurukkal of Karaveddy Pullair Kovil at Annaikoddai.

The wedding ceremony attended by Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, senior officers and friends ended with a sumptuous lunch treat.
