Sinha Regiment Swimmers Win Army Inter Regiment Open Water Swimming Championship - 2017

The Inter Regiment Open Water Swimming Championship - 2017 of the Army, organized by the Army Swimming and Water Ball Committee was held at the Mount Lavinia beach front this morning (8).

This swimming championship of 2 km in distance was held for the first time in the Army’s history and it was competed by 154 swimmers including 148 male and 6 female swimmers, representing all regiments of the Army.

Men’s Championship was won by the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) swimmers while the Sri Lanka Army Service Corps (SLASC) secured the runners-up slot. Women’s championship was won by the1 Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (SLAWC) while the 4 (V) Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps emerged runners-up.

In an individual event, Lance Corporal Wimal Kumara of SLASC and Private C.G.C Jinadari of 1 SLAWC carried the trophies for the Best Man and Woman category in the Inter Regiment open water swimming championship - 2017.

During the same ceremony, the highest aggregated point challenge trophy was awarded to the Gajaba Regiment (GR) and the 1 SLAWC.

Major General Piyal Wickramarathne, Director General General Staff (DGGS) of the Army as the Chief Guest graced the ceremony at the invitation of the Chairman, Army Swimming and Water ball Committee, Major General Senaka Wickramarathna and gave away the trophies and certificates to the winners. Brigadier Anura Sudasinghe, Director Army Sports, Senior Officers and many sports fans attended the occasion.
