The Security Force Headquarters - Mullaittivu (SFHQ-MLT) in parallel with New Year celebrations in other formations had its own traditional Sinhala and Tamil New Year festival on Saturday (22) at Puthukkudiyiruppu Pradeshiya Sabha ground where a large crowd of locals in the area joined hands with members of the armed forces for celebration of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.
Major General U. D Wijesekera RWP RSP USP rcds psc Commander, SF-MLT, and Mrs Shyamali Wijesekera, Chairperson, Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps Seva Vanitha Branch, attended the day’s event as distinguished guests.
Tug-of-war, selection of the ‘Avurudu Kumari’ (New Year Princess), eye-placing on the elephant, bun-eating, pillow challenge, breaking the pots, coconut leaves weaving, coconut-scraping, playing musical chairs, inflating a balloon, sack race, the lime-on-spoon race, fancy dress event, etc and many other Sinhala and Tamil traditional features coloured the event.
Later in the evening, a musical event, organized at the same place with the joint sponsorship of AGUS Trading Company, Melwa Company Limited, Maliban Biscuits Company Limited and Sukumali Jewellers in Mullaittivu drew a record crowd of about 15,000 people representing all walks of life.
A display of fireworks throughout the evening added glamour and colour to the festive evening.
Additional District Secretary for Mullaittivu, General Officers Commanding, Assistant Superintendent of Police for Mullaittivu, Brigade Commanders, Commanding Officers, Senior Officers, Officers and Other Ranks were associated with the events. In addition, representatives of donor agencies took part in the day’s festival.
