Russian De-mining Experts Arrive in Jaffna

The Chief of Engineering Troops of the Russian Armed Forces Lieutenant General Yuri Mikhailovich Stavitsky and his delegation in order to observe de-mining operations in the North arrived in the Jaffna peninsula on Tuesday (23) and called at the Security Force Headquarters - Jaffna to meet the Commander, Security Forces – Jaffna, Major General JagathKodithuwakku.

The delegation, composed of Colonel Alexander ViktorovichSkvortsov, Officer of the Directorate of the Chief of Engineering Troops of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, Colonel Andrei Vladimirovich Romanchuck, Brigade Commander Pontoon Brigade, Colonel Igor IvanovichPavelko - Chief of the Engineering Troops Training Centre before moving to the de-mining sites, received a comprehensive brief from Major General JagathKoddithuwakku.

Delegates also visited the Jaffna Fort, NallurKovil and General DenzilKobbekaduwa memorial at Araly Point before they moved to de-mining sites on the following day (24).

On Wednesday (24) those Russian Engineers saw for themselves how mechanical and manual clearing at Kadduwan Humanitarian De-mining site is carried out, coupled with a presentation. They also afterwards visited the Muhamalai de-mining site and received an updated briefing.

Before their departure, the head of the delegation Lieutenant General Yuri Mikhailovich Stavitsky signed the Visitors’ Book and exchanged mementoes.
