Prime Minister Narendra Modi Salutes Indian Jawans at IPKF Memorial in Solemn Ceremony

Prime Minister of Republic of India Mr Shri Narendra Modi, currently in Sri Lanka on a two-day (March 13 - 14) goodwill visit, minutes after his historic address in the Parliament, arrived at the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) war memorial at Battaramulla Friday (13) evening to salute the memory of Indian War Heroes who made the supreme sacrifice while serving Sri Lanka against ruthless terrorism.

The motorcade, flanked by Sri Lanka Military Police and Police outriders, reached the location sharp around 4.30 p.m. as scheduled with all military formalities intact.

Sri Lanka’s top military brass, led by General Jagath Jayasuriya, Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva, Commander of the Army, Vice Admiral Jayantha Perera, Commander of the Navy, Air Marshal Kolitha Gunatilleke, Commander of the Air Force and Mr. N.K Illangakoon, Inspector General of Police (IGP) warmly received the state guest on arrival as the troops of the Sri Lanka Artillery and Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police remained on vigil to begin the proceedings after inviting the visiting Prime Minister of India to the special dais.   
   
Amid honours, presented by troops of the Sri Lanka Artillery Regiment and Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, walked to the memorial and placed a floral wreath in a solemn moment of memory of Indian soldiers who had laid their lives for eradication of terrorism from Sri Lanka in late 1980s.

Sounding of the Last Post in line with military traditions and offer of traditional respect, signalled the end of the brief memorial service. Before his exit from the venue, Prime Minister Narendra Modi placed his signature in the VIP book where reminiscences remain recorded.   

The brief and dignified ceremony was attended by Mr Yashvardhan Kumar Sinha, Indian High Commissioner for Sri Lanka, senior diplomats, Major General Prasad Samarasinghe, Chief of Staff, Major General E.M.M. Ambanpola, Deputy Chief of Staff, Major General R.M.J.A Ratnayake, Commander, Log Command, Major General L.W.C.B.B Rajaguru, Director General, Infantry, Major General S.W.L Daulagala, Director General Projects, Major General S.H Munasinghe, Director General Army Health Services, Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Adjutant General, Major General H.C.P Goonetilleke, Commandant, Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force, Major General A.M Perera, Director General Sports, Major General R.V Udawatte, Director General Financial Management, Major General R Ratnasingham, Quarter Master General, Major General G.D.H.K Gunaratne, Master General Ordnance, Major General L.N Wickramasuriya, Chief Field Engineer, Major General Mahesh Senanayake, Military Secretary, Major General B.A Perera, Director General General Staff and a host of senior officers.
