Over 20 Local Teams &;amp; Foreigners Join GYMPO 2014 at Embilipitiya

Sappers 4 x 4 GYMPO 2014’, the pioneering off road event of the Army’s Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers (SLE), had its day at Sri Lanka School of Military Engineering at Embilipitiya on Sunday (7) to the cheers of thousands of spectators.

The event, organized for the successive fourth year was opened ceremonially by Major General V.U.B Nanayakkara, Colonel Commandant, SLE after hoisting the SLE flag. Major General H.C.P Gunathilake and Mr Sean Hameed joined the inauguration, raising the GYMPO flag and the Four Wheel Drive Club (FWDC) flag respectively.

The ‘Sappers 4 x 4 GYMPO 2014’ is held in close collaboration with the FWDC which just marked its 11th Anniversary. This year’s event turned more outstanding with the introduction of All Terrain Vehicles (ATV) to the Four Wheel Track at Embilipitiya.

In consistent with international rules of 4 x 4 sport, the highly competitive setting with many thrills and spills saw standard vehicles, standard modified vehicles, under 3000 cc vehicles, over 3000 cc vehicles, extreme class vehicles and motorbikes, competing in separate categories.

A total of 20 local teams, in addition to foreign participants from Australia, India and Malaysia contributed to the exciting event in the SLE calendar of important milestones, together with several international media representatives from India, Russia, Thailand and Lebanon.

The final winners received awards from the Chief Guest at the end of the event. On the same occasion two differently able War Heroes, Sergeant R.M.D Rathnayake of 5 SLE and Lance Corporal D.R Lalith Chamara of 10 SLE who turned visually impaired after injuries sustained in humanitarian operations, were donated Rs 1 lakh and Rs 2 lakhs respectively for supply of educational requirements of their children and for purchase of a land respectively.

A massive crowd including serving and retired senior officers, sponsors and senior officers of the FWDC attended the event that lasted for more than 8 hours.

Funds collected from this mammoth event are used for the benefit of families of fallen War Heroes, disable War Heroes, serving War Heroes and other members of the civil staff serving the Sri Lanka Engineers.
