Sri Lanka Army’s Rifle-Shooting contender in the forthcoming Olympics on the eve of his departure to London met the Commander of the Army to receive his Chief’s blessings and best wishes on Wednesday (18) morning.
Staff Sergeant Mangala Samarakoon of the Sri Lanka Army Service Corps (SLASC), who has made several records both at national and international events, succeeded in getting 592 shots out of 600 in total to be selected to represent in the 60-prone match event in the Olympics.
Joining the sphere of athletics as an ordinary athlete, he excelled in Rifle Shooting, making 3 Sri Lankan records in the 60 prone match, three position match (3 x 40) and 60 shot Air Rifle events.
His intense training however brought more laurels when he secured a Gold Medal in 2006 South Asian Games (SAG), the 7th place in Commonwealth Games (2010) and the 5th place in Asian Games (2010) in the same 60 prone event.
Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army during his meeting with the Staff Sergeant Samarakoon at the Army Headquarters inquired into his preparedness for the event and requested him to bring laurels to both the Army and the country alike in the Olympics.
Coached by Brigadier K.W Edema and the Army’s Commonwealth Gold Medalist, Warrant Officer - I Pushpakumari Ramanayaka, Staff Sergeant Samarakoon is to leave for London shortly.
Extending his best wishes to the Army athlete, the Commander thanked him for his sustained training and his dedication for the game.
