Newly Promoted Majors General Call on their Commander & Receive Traditional Swords

In keeping with military formalities, the five Senior Officers who were just promoted to the rank of Major General jointly paid a courtesy call on their Chief, Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army on Thursday (28) at the Army Headquarters and received symbolic swords that represent the power and authority of Major Generals from him.

HE the President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces on the recommendations of Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army promoted Brigadier Nihal Amarasekara, Brigadier Kumara Samarasingha, Brigadier Thilak Weerakoon, Brigadier Nishantha Herath and Brigadier Suresh Sallay to the rank of Major General, effective from 22 May 2020.

After congratulating them on their promotions and extending best wishes, Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva at the request of promoted Major General Suresh Sallay, pinned his new insignia on the epaulettes in the presence of others. At the same time, the Army Chief awarded symbolic swords to all five Majors General adding more significance to the rare occasion.

Lieutenant General Silva reminded them of the importance of elevating to the rank of a two-star General in the organization and how such promotions would augur well in the command and administration and more importantly, the prestige associated with this elevated rank. He underlined the significance of being an exemplary and admired personage while holding this authority and office after elevation to this rank.
