Students and scouts at Jayanthi Navodya Central College in Nikaweratiya jointly held a felicitation ceremony for Major General Sumith Atapattu, Director General Media & Military Spokesman on Saturday (28) upon recent elevation of his rank as a Major General who himself was the first scout to have received the President’s Badge in the region.
Nikaweratiya region has made a name for itself after producing well over 2,800 scouts and cubs in the recent past and Major General Atapattu was the first scout, decorated with the President’s Badge many years ago. Considering this achievement and his elevation to be a two-star Major General, Jayanthi Navodya Central College and Nikaweratiya people, business community and other well-wishers organized this felicitation as a stimulant to scouting field.
The business community of the area welcomed him in the Nikaweratiya town and conducted him to the school in a procession. Similarly, the principal, teachers and students warmly welcomed him on entering the Jayanthi Maha Vidyalaya premises at the main entrance, together with customary salute of school scouts. At first, he made offerings to the Buddha in the school shrine before he joined the flag-raising.
The felicitation ceremony got underway as part of the scouting project during the two-day long scout jamboree. Major General Sumith Atapattu as the Chief Guest for the day raised the National flag in the school premises before he was ushered to the main auditorium where the felicitation ceremony got to a start after he lit the traditional oil lamp.
The principal of the school, Mr H.M.A Herath delivered the welcome speech and greeted the region-produced 1st President’s scout who got the Presidential badge when he was doing scouting in the area.
Afterwards, Major General Atapattu was awarded an appreciative memento by the school principal before he was invited to make a few words on behalf the students. He recalled his memories as a young scout and underlined the importance of discipline and dedication.
