New Deputy Chief of Staff Begins His Duties at Army HQ

Major General G.R.R.P Jayawardena RWP RSP ndu of the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment, the newly-appointed Deputy Chief of Staff (DCOS), the 3rd most senior appointment of the Sri Lanka Army assumed office on Tuesday (21 Nov) at the Army HQ during a simple ceremony.

After conduct of own religious observances, Major General G.R.R.P Jayawardena RWP RSP ndu who is also the Colonel of the Regiment, Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment signed an official document symbolizing the acceptance of the new office in the presence of a gathering of Senior Officers and Staff Officers at the office of the Deputy Chief of Staff (DCOS).

Prior to this new appointment, Major General G.R.R.P Jayawardena RWP RSP ndu has been serving as the Quarter Master General of the Army. Senior Officers, Staff Officers and Other Ranks joined the occasion.

Here is a brief profile of Major General G.R.R.P Jayawardena RWP RSP ndu;

Born on 09th December 1968, he is a proud product of Kegalu Maha Vidyalaya and Dedigama Maha Vidyalaya. During his schooling, he excelled in studies and athletics earning honour and fame to the school.

He joined the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet on 22nd February 1988 in the Intake 29. Upon successful completion of the basic military training at the Sri Lanka Army Military Academy, Diyatalawa, he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and was posted to the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) which is an elegant Infantry Regiment of the Sri Lanka Army on 16 December 1989.

Throughout his military career, he has served in Command, Staff, and Instructional appointments exemplifying his extraordinary capacities in respective appointments in the Sri Lanka Army. He has extensively pledged exceptional dedication towards assignments of combat duties during the humanitarian operation in the North and East of the country for over 22 years before May 2009.

His appointments include Unit Intelligence Officer, Adjutant and Company Commander of 4 SLSR, 2nd in command of the 4 SLSR and 6 SLSR, Commanding Officer of 8 SLSR, Officer Commanding of 4th Contingent of the Sri Lankan Troops in the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Lebanon, Officiating Commander of the 542 Infantry Brigade, Commander, 542 and 661 Infantry Brigades, Chief Executive Officer of the 'Nelum Pokuna' Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre, Director of Directorate of Asset Management, Commandant of the Infantry Training Centre, General Officer Commanding of the 57 Infantry Division, Commander, Security Forces – East and Quarter Master General of the Army.

Major General G.R.R.P Jayawardena RWP RSP ndu had the opportunity of participating in military training programmes, such as Battalion Intelligence Officers' Course, Officers' Logistics and Administration Course, Young Officers’ Course, Psychological Operation Course, Potential Observer and Staff Officers' Course, Officers’ Mortar Course - India, Young Officers’ Course – Pakistan, Mid-Career Course – Pakistan and Battalion Command Course – China.

The Senior Officer has also followed a number of higher educational and non-military courses, such as Executive Diploma in Human Resource Management at the University of Colombo, Diploma in Professional and World Affairs at the Bandaranaike International Diplomatic Training Institute Colombo, Diploma in Conflict Resolution and Skills Development at the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies, Master’s Degree in Human Resource Management at the University of Colombo and Master’s Degree in Security And Strategic Studies at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University.

He is also an alumnus of the National Defence University of Islamabad in Pakistan, where he earned his Master of Science in National Security and War Studies.

The Senior Officer has been adorned with gallantry awards of 'Rana Wickrama Padakkama' (RWP) and 'Rana Sura Padakkama' (RSP) for his distinguished conduct in the face of the enemy.

He is a recipient of Campaign Medals of East Humanitarian Operation Medal, North Humanitarian Operation Medal, Purna Bhumi Padakkama, North and East Operations Medal, and Riviresa Campaign Service Medal. Further, he received the 50th Independence Anniversary Medal in 1998, Sri Lanka Army 50th Anniversary Medal in 1999, 75th Independence Day Commemoration Medal in 2023, Sri Lanka Armed Services Long Service Medal, Sewabhimani Medal, Service Medal and Videsha Seva Padakkama in recognition of his distinguished service to the organization.

Major General G.R.R.P Jayawardena RWP RSP ndu is also the Colonel of the Regiment, Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment and married to Mrs Omila Jayawardena and blessed with one daughter.
