Mullaittivu-based 64 Infantry Division troops on the eve of Christmas day (23 December) extended their support for conduct of X’mas services in several churches by fully cleaning church compounds and their surroundings before midnight prayers drew huge crowds.
Major General Darshana Wijesekera, Commander, Security Forces - Mullaittivu instructed his troops to undertake those projects. Accordingly, 14 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (14 SLSR) troops cleaned the St. Joseph Church at Kulamrippu under the guidance of Major General Nissanka Eriyagama, General Officer Commanding (GOC), 64 Infantry Division under the supervision of Lieutenant Colonel H.M.P.C Herath, Civil Affairs Officer, 641 Infantry Brigade and Major R.M.N.L Rajanayake, Acting Commanding Officer of 14 SLSR.
Moreover, 17 Sri Lanka Gajaba Regiment (17 (V) GR) conducted a similar cleaning programme in the Methodist Church compound at Thanduwan village under the guidance of Brigadier Medanka Alwis, Commander, 642 Infantry Brigade. Major A.H.M.S.C Abeysinghe, Commanding Officer (CO) of 17 (V) Gajaba Regiment closely supervised the programme.
Meanwhile, 19 Sri Lanka Gemunu Watch (19 GW) and 5 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (5 (V) SLSR) troops took steps to rid garbage and clean the St Sebastian Shrine, located at Nandikadal under the guidance of Major General Mahinda Ranasinghe, GOC, 59 Infantry Division and Colonel Chinthaka Wijenayaka, Commander, 593 Infantry Brigade.
Major U.K.D.L.K Udugama, CO, 19 Gemunu Watch and Major M.P Hettiarachchi, CO, 5 (V) SLSR conducted the project.
