Mullaittivu Tile &;amp; Brick Industry Reviving

THE FAMOUS tile and brick production industry in Mullaittivu District is to be revived again, providing more than 500 employment openings under the Government’s ‘Uthuru Wasanthaya’ (Northern Spring) programme.

The brick making factory in Oddusuddan Division, run by Mullaittivu District Thrift and Credit Co-op Societies’ Union remained closed for more than three decades due to LTTE terrorist activities, depriving jobs for more than 500 Mullaittivu civilians in the past, but the timely intervention of the Government saw it re-repaired and put back on wheels again recently on the instructions of Major General (retd) G.A. Chandrasiri, Governor for Northern Province.

The ceremony to hand over the renovated brick factory to the civilians in the area took place recently since the Sanasa Bank under Northern Province Industrial Development programme has come forward to maintain the production process of this factory with 50 employees at the initial stage.

Mrs Imelda Sukumar, District Secretary for Mullaittivu participating at the occasion told the gathering that her District Secretariat, in addition to the re-opening of this brick factory, has launched a self-employment programme. Under this project, 29 self-employees were to receive Rs.30,000/= each for their self-help business while 204 civilians, intending to start their own self-employment ventures were to receive Rs. 15,000/= each within a week.

To this date, out of 28,000 re-settled people in the district, more than 4000 have now taken to agriculture with the direct support given by Agricultural Associations. Out of 107 Mullaittivu District registered Agriculture Development Associations, 20 have already been revived along with 30 Credit Lending Associations in the district, the District Secretary added.

Major General Athula Jayawardena, Commander, Security Forces, Mullaittivu gracing the re-opening ceremony told the gathering that Sri Lanka Army has already initiated a number of welfare and development projects for the benefit of Mullaittivu civilians after re-settlement programmes. Once demining was over, a fully fledged development programme and creation of more and more employment opportunities covering fisheries industry, both sea and fresh water, agriculture, industry, self-help, farming, etc are to be launched in the district, Major General Jayawardena said.

Chief Secretary for Northern Provincial Council Mrs R. Vijaya Lakshmi, Commissioner for Mullaittivu Cooperatives Mr Subramanium Sharma and a host of Senior Officers attended the occasion.
