Muhamalai Civilians amid X'mas Carols Given Relief Packs

To be in line with the festive season, the 552 Infantry Brigade HQ of the 55 Infantry Division under the Security Force HQ- Jaffna initiated a community-oriented project and a conduct of X'mas Carols at 'Arogyamatha' Church premises in Muhamalai, Jaffna on Tuesday (Dec 20), following guidance given by Brigadier Wijayanath Jayaweera, Commander 552 Infantry Brigade and Major General Prasanna Gunaratne, General Officer Commanding (GOC), 55 Infantry Division.

The X'mas project, adorned with singing of Christmas Carols in the presence of Most Reverend Dr Justin Bernard Gnanapragasam, Bishop of Jaffna Diocese and Reverend Father S Anton George of 'Arogyamatha' Church gave away 100 dry ration packs for expectant mothers and low-income families. In addition, the project also included the donation of 125 school bags, stationery and instruments to poverty-stricken school students in the area.

The sponsorship to the value of Rs 1.6 m for this endeavour was provided by the past pupils of Good Shepherd Convent in Kotahena and their friends, led by Mrs Minoli Malwana, and Mrs Shermika Kuweju. The coordination of Major R.R.S Dehigala, Civil Affairs Officer of the 552 Infantry Brigade contributed to the success of the project.

The Commanding Officers of the 1 Mechanized Infantry Regiment and 23 Gemunu Watch Regiment along with the Civil Affairs Officer of the 552 Infantry Brigade were instrumental in organizing the whole project and distribution ceremony after Carols were staged in the premises.

The General Officer Commanding, 55 Infantry Division, Brigade Commanders of 551, 552 and 553 Infantry Brigades, Mr S Subramuniyam Suren, Chairman, Palai Pradeshiya Sabha and the donors were present at the joyful event.
