Mock War Game, New Feature to the Forthcoming ‘Ex-Cormorant Strike’ Launched

The preceding War Game of the forthcoming ‘Exercise Cormorant Strike VIII- 2017’ got underway at the 4 Special Forces Battalion Headquarters in Monkey Bridge, Trincomalee during 10 - 11 August.

The ‘War Game’, introduced by the Ex Director, Major General Aruna Jayasekera, General Officer Commanding, 22 Division as a new feature to the planned ‘Exercise Cormorant Strike - 2017’ in September.

The purpose of conducting a mock war game, prior to the ‘Ex-Cormorant Strike’ was to acquaint participating Officers with the most effective tools of determining the feasibility, suitability and acceptability of a selected course of action, developed systematically to encounter any given situation and to train Officers for planning, conduct, techniques and methodologies before the actual setting of the Exercise gets underway.

It is also a strategy game that deals with military operations of various types, real or fictional, which is also considered as the theoretical study or the conflict simulation, which in turn could be professionally used by the military.

Troops of the Commando and Special Force Brigade during this ‘wargaming’ Exercise acted as own forces and Air Mobile Brigade troops played the opponents’ role.

In this scenario, players were given three fictional situations to be planned, including a Cyber threat. Players on the first day (August 10) went through the planning process before it was implemented. Officers from Sri Lanka Air Forces and Sri Lanka Navy also contributed to this simulation and supported Army officers in Planning.

On the second day (August 11), the two-sided war game experience was conducted, providing a new experience for the players of tri service personnel.

Major General Aruna Jayasekara, Exercise Director, together with the Senior Deputy Director of the Exercise, Colonel J.M.C Jayaweera, Commander, 233 Brigade, Senior Officers of the Commando Brigade and Special Force Brigade and a few other Officers closely observed the War Game.

Commander, Navy Eastern Command, Rear Admiral Travis Sinniah was also among those who witnessed the mock scenario. Around 60 officers, including seven Navy officers and five Air Force officers participated in the game.
