MIR's Founding Father Visits Regimental Headquarters &;amp; Opens Five Storied Mess Building

The founding father of the Army’s Mechanized Infantry Regiment (MIR), Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army on Monday (27), had the rare distinction of being the first Commander to have visited the MIR Regimental Headquarters at Dambulla as the Chief Guest.

MIR with its sophisticated fleet of military hardware during the peak of humanitarian operations to rid terrorism from the country’s soil, made an unparalleled contribution to the success story against terrorism in Sri Lanka.

It was Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, then serving Wanni battlefields as a senior officer who founded the MIR in the year 2007 to meet with fast-rising enemy challenges.

Monday’s ceremonies at Dambulla marked the MIR’s 5th anniversary and the ceremonial opening of the modern but eco-friendly new five-storied ‘Dehippawa’ Officers’ Mess building at the premises, built protecting the entire lush greenery in the environment.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army on arrival at the MIR Headquarters premises was greeted with a Guard Turn Out and a Guard of Honour in accordance with military traditions after Major General Milinda Peiris, Colonel of the MIR, extended a warm welcome to the visiting Chief Guest.

The opening of the 5 storied building came about after the Commander was invited to cut a ribbon and unveil the plaque on the new construction. Lieutenant General Jayasuriya accompanied by Colonel of the Regiment went round the entire complex and saw for himself how the construction was brought to a finish conserving the nature.

On the same occasion, the Commander declared the new golf course in the Regimental Headquarters premises opened, adding one more memorable feature to the entire Regiment at the invitation of the MIR Colonel of the Regiment. The Commander afterwards went round the Headquarters premises and visited each and every wing, many of which were initiated during his time as Colonel of the Regiment. During the tour he paused a few minutes to see for himself the new main administrative complex, for which he laid the foundation stone in December 2008 as Commander of the Army. He also planted a tree sapling in the premises as a token of memory of his visit to the venue before he left for Colombo.

Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya in his brief address to the troops at MIR Regimental Headquarters on the occasion of their 5th anniversary said that he was very pleased to be associated with the arrangements as the first Colonel of the MIR to have been appointed as a Commander of the Army. The MIR’s contribution to the ground troops in the Humanitarian Operations was immense as a support wing while the troops were marching ahead. That contribution and your skills freed the country from the scourge of terrorism and put the country on a path of speedy recovery and development.

‘As members of the MIR troops you have made a tremendous progress in the field of sports and welfare during the past year. At the end of the war, we all must be better prepared to face any challenges as we march towards to be the miracle of Asia. We must support the efforts of HE the President in this regard,’ the Commander said.

Identical to how we all fought against terrorism, we all as a disciplined organization should help take the country on the path of development since it is a prime responsibility on our part.

‘We should not under any circumstances allow terrorism to take roots once again in our soil. For that, the President as well as the Secretary of Defence and Urban Development offer us the maximum support and we should not do anything that would tarnish the image of the organization,’ he said.

On this historic occasion of the 5th anniversary, I remember the fallen War Heroes with gratitude and wish speedy recovery to injured MIR troops still recuperating, the Commander added.
