Memory of ‘Hasalaka War Hero’ Refreshed with Floral Tributes

The 30th commemorative ceremony of the frequently remembered War Hero, late Corporal Gamini Kularatne alias ‘Hasalaka War Hero’ whose supreme sacrifice on 14 July 1991 at Elephant Pass defended the Army camp by destroying the LTTE’s explosive-laden dozer which was trying to ram into the camp, got underway on Wednesday (14) at Hasalaka War Hero’s monument at Elephant Pass.

The Commemoration Ceremony was organized by the 662 Brigade on the direction of the General Officer Commanding, 66 Division, Major General Ajith Dissanayaka and under the close supervision of the Commander, 662 Brigade Colonel Chaminda Liyanage.

The simple, yet dignified commemorative ceremony at Elephant Pass, organized on the guidelines given by the General Officer Commanding, 66 Division, Major General Ajith Dissanayaka, received further recognition when the Commander, Security Forces - Wanni and Colonel of the Regiment of the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment, Major General Hemantha Bandara, representing late War Hero’s own Regiment, arrived there as the Chief Guest for the ceremony.

Hasalaka War Hero, who had been decorated posthumously with the highest gallantry medal, Parama Weera Vibhushanaya (PWV) belonged to the 6 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment and was serving the garrison when terrorists were attempting to break in.

The day’s Chief Guest paid his tribute to the War Hero by lighting the eternal flame atop the monument and saluted the statue placing a floral wreath in a solemn moment.

The General Officer Commanding, 66 Division, Major General Ajith Dissanayaka, General Officer Commanding, 51 Division, Major General Deepal Pussella, General Officer Commanding, 57 Division, Major General Priyantha Jayawardana and Senior Officers, together with Other Ranks paid their respect in succession before the event ended.

The simple occasion was organized, adhering to strict COVID-19 health guidelines.
