The newly-erected tribute to the memory of War Heroines of the Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (SLAWC) who fought hand in hand with War Heroes before May 2009 was declared open in the SLAWC Regimental HQ at Borella this morning (10).
Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, Commander of the Army at the invitation of Major General U.D Wijesekera RWP RSP USP rcds psc, Colonel Commandant, Sri Lanka Army Women's Corps and Commandant, Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF) unveiled the monument dedicated to the memory of fallen War Heroines.
After the arrival of the Commander of the Army, all the invitees joined religious observances in front of the new SLAWC War Heroines’ monument.
Subsequently, the day’s Chief Guest Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage was invited to unveil the plaque of the new memorial.
Minutes after the unveiling, the playing of Rana Bera (warriors’ drums), Vigil Mounting, observance of a two-minute silence and reading of the citation in honour of 25 War Heroines who made the supreme sacrifice added dignity and honour to their memory.
Seconds after that, the Commander of the Army, together with other Senior Officers and next of kin of 25 War Heroines laid the first floral wreath at the foot of the monument and paid respect to their memory. The Army Chief also had a close look at the new monument.
Sounding of the Last Post and Reveille in conformity with military traditions culminated the formal ceremony.
Afterwards, all the invitees shared refreshments together with the Commander of the Army where the Commander of the Army interacted with the next of kin of those 25 War Heroines.
The inauguration ceremony, organized by the Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps under the close supervision and guidance of Major General U.D Wijesekera RWP RSP USP rcds psc, Colonel Commandant, SLAWC would remain an eternal memory to their invaluable sacrifices.
Major General G.R.R.P Jayawardena RWP RSP ndu, Overlooking Chief of Staff and Quarter Master General, Major General S.P.A.I.M.B Samarakoon Hdmc Lsc, Commander, Army Logistic Command, Major General W.H.K.S Peiris RWP RSP VSV USP ndu, Commander, Security Forces - West (SF-West), Major General M.K Jayawardena RSP USP ndu, Commander, Security Forces - Mullaittivu, Senior Officers, Other Ranks and relatives of those 25 War Heroines joined the event.
