Major General (Retd) M.V Kurukulasuriya Passes Away


Funeral arrangements of Major General (Retd) M.V Kurukulasuriya who passed away takes place on Monday (12) with military honours at General Cemetery, Borella at 5.00 p.m.

His cortege leaves No. 41, Sri Soratha Mawatha, Gangodawila, Nugegoda at 3.00 p.m.

MAJOR GENERAL MV KURUKULASURIYA (RTD)

 It is with extreme feeling of deep sorrow, sincerity and wholehearted emotional sympathy, the Commander of the Army, Officers and Other Ranks express their immense grief on the demise of Major General MV Kurukulasuriya (Rtd) on 10th August 2013 in Colombo.

Marakkalage Vijitha Kurukulasuriya was born on 23rd May 1934 in Kudawella, Matara. He was educated at Rahula College, Matara and subsequently at the University of Peradeniya where he was graduated as a Bachelor of Arts and became a self-motivated character.

Vijitha Kurukulasuriya had decided to answer the call of the country with the intention of serving the Motherland and the Nation. Having enlisted into the Sri Lanka Army as a direct enlisted Officer, he was commissioned in the rank of Lieutenant on 17th March 1958, into the Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps. Due to his dedication and commitment towards the duties in all fields of military activity, he was elevated to the rank of Captain on 02nd May 1962 and Major on 17th March 1969. In recognition of his exemplary and dedicated service rendered to the Nation, he was promoted to the rank of Major General on 02nd May 1989. He retired from the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army on 03rd May 1989.

He bore a dynamic personality by nature and was a true gentleman who gave his maximum at all times for the fulfillment of assigned tasks. The knowledge he gained from his academic studies at the University of Peradeniya and the experience he acquired over the years as a military officer enabled him to make a significant contribution to the Sri Lanka Army and his Regiment.

In recognition of his valuable contribution to the Sri Lanka Army, he was awarded the following medals of honour.

The Late Major General MV Kurukulasuriya leaves behind his beloved family members, friends, brother officers, soldiers and the Nation, whom he served with dedication and patriotism. To them, we extend our sincere condolence with its simplicity clothed in kindness, honesty and endless thought in appreciation of a gentleman officer, friend and a brother. His passing away definitely is an irreparable loss to his family, the service he represented and the country he served. The Commander of the Army and all ranks join the family members of the Late Major General MV Kurukulasuriya, in their hour of grief.

The last rites of the Late Major General MV Kurukulasuriya with full military honors will be held on 12th August 2013 at 1700 hrs at the General Cemetery, Borella.

Though you have departed, your name will forever remain close to our hearts as a great leader and a patriot of Mother Lanka.
