Major General D.A Amarasekara USP Retires After Exemplary 34-Year Military Service

The retiring Major General D.A Amarasekara USP of the Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (SLEME) arrived at the office of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu on Wednesday (21), together with his family members, upon invitation.

Having served in an exemplary manner for more than 34 years, Major General D.A Amarasekara USP was praised by Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage for his outstanding capacity, dedication and commitment to the Army as he prepares for retirement.

Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage also refreshed memories of the retiree’s invaluable sacrifices and dedicated roles during the height of the war against terrorism as a Logistic Officer before May 2009 and in the post-war scenario. The Army Chief, while sharing a few pleasantries with the guests, also inquired into the retiring Senior Officer's future endeavors and wished him good luck. He also appreciated the invaluable support that has been given by his family members throughout his career.

The retiring Senior Officer, in turn, thanked the Commander of the Army for his wishes and guidance while mentioning the encouragement he received in the performance of his duties. Towards the end of the interaction, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage awarded a special memento to the outgoing Major General D.A Amarasekara USP as a symbol of appreciation and commendation, along with a special gift to the family.

Here follows a brief profile of the retiring Senior Officer:

Major General D.A Amarasekara USP joined the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet on 14 November 1989. Whilst the Senior Officer was undergoing the military training at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence Academy - Ratmalana in Intake KDU 7, he was selected to follow the Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering at University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, Pakistan. Upon successful completion of his studies and military training at Sri Lanka Military Academy - Diyatalawa, he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers on 14 November 1991. Throughout his career, he held various appointments and steadily elevated to subsequent ranks, ultimately reaching the rank of Major General on 24 September 2023.

He held the office of Commander, Forward Maintenance Area (Mullaitivu) at the time of his retirement. He also held appointments such as Platoon Commander of Internal Security Platoon in Vavuniya, Workshop Officer of 5 SLEME, Officer Commanding of Field Workshop (Palaly), Officer Commanding (Administration) of 1 SLEME, Officer Commanding of SLEME Workshop (Colombo), Adjutant of 5 SLEME, Officer Commanding of Medium Workshop 5 SLEME, Officer Commanding of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Troops- Sri Lanka Battalion in the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), Second-in-Command of Base Workshop (Katubedda), Staff Officer 1(Administration and Quartering) of 56 Infantry Division, Overlooking Commandant of Base Workshop (Udawalawa), Commanding Officer of 3 and 5 SLEME Battalions, Commandant of Army Industrial Project (Kosgama), Commandant of Base Workshop (Katubedda), Colonel (Administration and Quartering) of 68 Infantry Division, Colonel (Administration and Quartering) of Security Force Headquarters (Mullaitivu), Commandant of School of SLEME, Brigadier (Administration and Quartering) of National Cadet Corps, Brigadier (Administration and Quartering) of Security Force Headquarters (Kilinochchi), Brigadier (Administration and Quartering) of 1 Corps, and Brigadier (Administration and Quartering) of Security Force Headquarters (West).

He has followed many local and foreign courses during his military career, such as Unit Accounting Officers Course, Psychological Operations Training Course, Advanced English Course, Young Officers Basic Course- Bangladesh, Workshop Company Commanders Course – India, Officers’ Advanced Mechanical Engineering Course - India and Senior Officers Electronics and Mechanical Engineering Course - India.

Moreover, the Senior Officer also pursued a number of higher educational and non-military courses, such as a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, Pakistan, a Master in Science (Defence Studies) in Management at General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University and completed the final examination of the Institute of Automotive Engineers in Sri Lanka.
