Major General Wasantha Abrew assumed duties as the 9th Commander, Security Forces-West on Tuesday (8) at the SFHQ-West premises at Panagoda, amidst religious and military formalities. He is also the Colonel of the Regiment, Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI).
The newly-appointed Commander of the Security Force Headquarters - West (SFHQ-West) was warmly welcomed on arrival by Senior Staff Officers and was invited to receive the salute in the formal Guard Turnout, presented by troops of the Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI). Seconds after, the stage was set to award the highest salute, Guard of Honour to the incoming West Commander at the parade ground. From the special dais, he afterwards took the salute after review of the parade, together with the parade commander.
Afterwards, Major General Wasantha Abrew in his new office placed his signature for the first official document to mark his assumption of office, amidst chanting of 'Seth Pirith' of the Maha Sangha. Later on, he was invited to plant a sapling as a gesture of memory. Several senior officers were present at the occasion.
An All Rank tea afterwards and a formal address to the Officers and Other Ranks culminated the day's proceedings. Officers of the SFHQ-West, General Officers Commanding of the 14, 61 Divisions and Brigade Commanders, Center Commandants, Commandants, Commanding Officers and Other Ranks serving under the SFHQ-West witnessed the parade and the formal ceremony.
