Kankesanthurai Buddhist Temple Holds Katina Pooja after 67 Years

The traditional Katina Pooja (rainy retreat) in the historic Tissa Raja Maha Vihara in Kankesanthurai, preceded by a series of religious observances. The climax of the whole religious festival took place on Tuesday (3) with the participation of Maha Sangha and a gathering of military personnel with Commander, Security Forces-Jaffna Major General Senarath Bandara. The project was assisted by troops under the supervision of the Commander, Forward Maintenance Area-North, Brigadier Wanditha Mahinkanda since it was to be held at this temple after absence of 67 years. The religious programme in relation to the transportation of the statue that was to be placed inside the new shrine of the same temple in KKS commenced on 29th October.

On arrival of the statue in Jaffna, the Commander, Security Forces - Jaffna, Major General Senarath Bandara received the Buddha statue and enshrined it in the shrine room at Tissa Maha Vihara. A special Bodhi Pooja including offering of herbal Pooja was conducted by members of the Maha Sangha present to mark the occasion. The religious programme concluded with alms-giving and offering of 'Atapirikara' to Bhikkus and Katinanisansa sermon by the chief incumbent of the Sri Nagaviharaya Viharadhikari Shasthrapathi Ven.
