A Joint Search for Arrest of Suspects Continues in Ichchalanpattai


A joint investigation launched by Army-Navy and the Police in the general area of Ichchalanpattai, Trincomalee is now underway to apprehend suspects following the recovery of a bag containing a T-56 weapon with ammunition at Lanka Patuna beach near a Naval detachment on Monday (5).

A Press Release in this connection, issued by Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya, Military Spokesman at Media Centre, Ministry of Defence and Urban Development is as follows;

The Sri Lanka Army and the Navy along with the Police have launched an investigation including a search in the general area Ichchilampattai to apprehend suspects in relation to an incident where a T 56 weapon with several rounds of ammunition was found in a bag at Lanka Patuna beach near a Naval detachment.

According to preliminary investigations around 1830 hrs on 5 May 2014 a senior sailor from the Navy camp located a few hundred meters away from the incident while jogging along the beach had seen two young males carrying something wrapped in a fertilizer bag. They had acted strange and the parcel too had appeared suspicious. The sailor had approached them and the two suspects have escaped. In the melee, the bag was left on the beach. A T 56 weapon with ammunition was found in it.

A joint Army, Navy and Police investigation and search is underway and so far no arrests have been made. (Ends)
