JAFFNA DISTRICT SECRETARY POOH-POOHS PRO-LTTE REPORTS ON DISPLACED CIVILIANS

JAFFNA: DISTRICT Secretary for JAFFNA Mr. K. GANESH categorically denies having requested “any immediate assistance from JAFFNA NGOs to help meet basic needs of VANNI people” arriving in JAFFNA for temporary housing.

Mr. K. GANESH speaking to www.army.lk asserted that JAFFNA does not have any such “detention centres for fleeing WANNI civilians,” but twelve Welfare Centres where as of Friday (24) some 11,500 displaced civilians remain housed.

“We have enough stocks and situation in those Welfare Centres is good. I have not spoken to any specific NGO as such for help, nor have I requested NGOs for specific things. What I told them was something totally different, and has been completely distorted. In response to a inquiry made at the conclusion of a meeting of local NGOs, whether those displaced people needed any more assistance, I told them if you wished to give anything voluntarily for the displaced, it was up to them. I never requested urgent supplies as such from them,” Mr. Ganesh added.

Present stocks of dry rations and other essentials in JAFFNA are adequate and other facilities such as their health and sanitary requirements are regularly supervised and monitored by appointed welfare officers. Those media reports are therefore baseless and misleading, the civil administrator for JAFFNA underlined.
