Inter-Regiment Cricket Championship Trophy Awarded to Ordnance Corps

The Army Inter-Regiment Cricket Championship-2011, played between Artillery and Ordnance Corps teams Monday (8) evening at Muththukumaru Cricket grounds at Panagoda Army Cantonment, generated a wave of overwhelming enthusiasm and drew a mammoth crowd of cricket fans to the pitch.

The convincing Ordnance Corps team emerged Champions in the final encounter recording a resounding victory and received the elite Championship Trophy from the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya who graced the occasion as Chief Guest at the invitation of the Army Cricket Committee.

Major General U.A.B Medawela, Chairman, Sri Lanka Army Cricket Committee warmly received the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya on arrival at the venue.

Fourteen Regiments of the Army including Sri Lanka Armoured Corps, Sri Lanka Signal Corps, Sri Lanka Light Infantry, Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment, Gemunu Watch, Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment, Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps, Sri Lanka Artillery Regiment, Military Intelligence Corps, Engineer Service Regiment, Sri Lanka Army Service Corps, Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps, Sri Lanka Army Military Police and Sri Lanka National Guard teams vied for supremacy in the Inter-Regiment Tournament at Oruwala and Panagoda Grounds during separate encounters in the past few days under two groups (A and B) before Monday’s (8) finals.

 Sri Lanka Army Cricket Committee in the past one year (2010-2011) has been working tirelessly to promote and rejuvenate cricket among officers and soldiers in the Army. As a result, Army cricketers secured a number of considerable achievements in the field of cricket in the past few months.

They were the winners of Male Cricket Golden Jubilee Trophy (6 a side), runners-up in Moratuwa Cambridge Cricket Tournament, Quarter-Finalist under 23 Cricket Tournament conducted by Sri Lanka Cricket, Champions of the Defence Services Games (cricket), Semi-Finalist in the Premier League (limited overs) Tier B cricket tournament and the Runners-Up, Premier League - 2011 conducted by Sri Lanka Cricket.

Sri Lanka Army Cricket team to this date has won seven matches out of all 9 matches they have so far played.

Sri Lanka Army in the past few years has produced a wide collection of national-level cricketers who have brought fame and glory particularly to the Army and the country in general. 2 Lieutenant Ajantha Mendis, now a test cricketer is from the Artillery Regiment. The right arm leg spinner, Lance Corporal Prasanna Sekkuge as one of the budding Army cricketers is currently in England playing for the Sri Lanka ‘A’ cricket team. He also represented the same team in Australia, Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka and Canada, Ireland and Sri Lanka last year. Captaining the Army Cricket team in the Premier ‘B’ Tournament of the Sri Lanka Cricket, Sekkuge succeeded in capturing 67 wickets in eight matches to his credit.

Meanwhile, newly formed inter unit Army women’s cricket clubs have so far shone brightly setting a string of new records in the field of women’s cricket across the country in the most recent past.

As recent as July 28, 7 Women’s Corps Cricket team secured the Inter-Unit Women’s Cricket Championship. Before that, Army Women’s Cricket team beat several famous island-wide women’s cricket teams and emerged Champions in the field.
