Finals in the Inter Regiment Badminton Championship 2019 got underway recently on Friday (17) at the Panagoda Indoor Stadium, graced by Major General Jagath Gunawardena, Commandant Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force and Colonel Commandant, Sri Lanka Engineers (SLE) as the Chief Guest.
The preliminary rounds of the tournament began on 13 January 2020 to be competed by players in 16 Regiments and continued until the closing ceremony on Friday (17).
Participants under 11 event categories as Group Male, Open Single Male, Open Double Male, Single Male (over 35), Double Male (over 35), Single Male (over 40), Double Male (over 40), Single Male (Over 50), Double Male (Over 50), Women’s Open Single and Women’s Open Double vied for supremacy during the tournament.
Sri Lanka Ordnance Corps (SLAOC) during this year’s championship in the open male category emerged as male champions and carried away the trophy. The 2nd place was won by players in the Gajaba Regiment (GR) and the 3rd went to the Vijayabhu Infantry Regiment (VIR) players.
Meanwhile, in the open female category, the championship was secured by players in the Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps (SLAGSC), 2nd place went to the Sri Lanka Army Women's Corps (SLAWC) and the 3rd place to the Sri Lanka Signal Corps (SLSC) players.
Subsequently, Second Lieutenant H. M Abeyratne of Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps was titled as the Best Sportswoman and Lance Corporal M. D. S. L Priyaratna of Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps received the Best Sportsman title.
Major General Puraka Senevirathna, Chairman, Army Badminton Committee was specific in selecting players for this year's championship. Sergeant H. E Ruwan Pathirana and Corporal W. H. M Weerasinghe of Gemunu Watch (GW) were adjudged as excellent players using their own exceptionally trained play styles.
Senior Officers present at the finals joined the distribution of trophies and certificates to the achievers.
