Gunner 'Super Cross' Funds Build A New House for a Disabled War Hero

A newly-built house through the funds of the Gunner Supercross for the disabled War Hero, Lance Corporal D. Karunarathne, attached to the Sri Lanka Artillery (SLA) Regiment was vested in him and his family during a ceremony at Pahala Delgoda, Polgahawela on Tuesday (11).

The disabled War Hero of the Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (SLEME, attached to the SLA Artillery Workshop, Minneriya suffered an unexpected LTTE clay-more mine attack in the year 1997 while he was travelling in a military convoy across Settikulam. All his fellow-travellers died in the attack but he survived with severe injuries.

The SLEME Artillery Workshop, Minneriya, having learnt his status quo came forward to construct the new house for him, using the funds collected in the Gunner Supercross. The SLA Seva Vanitha Unit, presided by Mrs Priyangani Jayasundara also offered their assistance in many ways to the project.

At the request of the SLEME Artillery Workshop, the Colonel Commandant of the Sri Lanka Artillery, Major General Priyantha Jayasundara, showing his concern to the worthy cause, initiated this deserving project and completed it in a few months under the supervision of the SLA Brigade.

Keys to the new house were delivered to Lance Corporal D Karunarathne by Mrs Priyangani Jayasundera, Chairperson SLA Seva Vanitha Unit during the ceremony on behalf of the SLA Colonel Commandant.

The Centre Commandant, SLA, Colonel D.M.A.P Dissanayake along with other senior Officers, Members of the Artillery Seva Vanitha Unit, Officers and Other Ranks attended the occasion.
