THE GOVERNMENT YESTERDAY once again urged the LTTE to renounce terrorism and enter into a political dialogue even as the All Party Representative Committee (APRC) was yet to put forward the final solution to the long standing North - East conflict.Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama said that although the APRC, headed by Professor Tissa Vitarana, was still formulating a political solution to the conflict, the government would continue to support the agenda of countering terrorism of all aspects.
\'Terrorism should be defeated and we ask the LTTE to renounce terrorism and enter into political dialogues. We have to instill that terrorism can\'t prevail over the will of the people,\' Foreign Minister Bogollagama told the media yesterday.
The Foreign Minister also said that the government was recruiting people to the police in the Eastern Province in the hope of improving the Human Rights records in the area adding that already some 200 Tamils had signed up. \'It is very evident that there\'s an improvement in the eastern province and that normalcy is fast returning to the area but stability will only occur when it is supported by security,\' he added.
In addition to this the Minister also said that the appointment of Minister Susil Premajayantha to the UNESCO Executive Committee held at Paris was a major achievement for Sri Lanka in improving its international image.
Minister of Education, Susil Premajayantha was nominated to represent the country at the 34th General Conference which Sri Lanka took part in for the second consecutive year. Sri Lanka had the votes of 130 countries.
Minister Premajayantha had explained to UNESCO of plans to improve the conditions of education, culture and science at international and local levels and asked for its co-operation to create ties between South Asian countries and small islands to bring about sustainable development.
He had noted that education was one of the most powerful tools that could be utilized to effect change and promote peace and understanding among people. (Courtesy: Daily Mirror)
