French &;amp; British Foreign Ministers Receive First-Hand Updates from Civilians

FRENCH and British foreign ministers, accompanied by several Sri Lankan ministers, secretary to Foreign Ministry and senior officials arrived at the Manic Farm Relief Village today (29) to receive a first-hand assessment of the prevailing sanitary and welfare arrangements. 

British Foreign Minister David Miliband and his French counterpart Bernard Kouchner along with Ministers Rizard Badurdeen, Rohita Abeygunawardane, Maheepala Herath and foreign secretary Palitha Kohana on their arrival in Vavuniya were received by Major General Jagath Jayasuriya. Commander Security Frorces Headquarters (Wanni).

UN sponsored World Food Programme  centres, Cooperative shops, and pre-schools inside the IDP centre were inspected by two visiting Foreign Ministers before they spoke to a cross section of the inmates with the help of a Tamil- English interpreter. 

IDPs during their interaction with the visitors explained the visiting VIPs how they were received and provided with basic facilities afterwards, including security by the Armed Forces and the government after they escaped the LTTE grip. 

French Foreign Minister later on inspected the temporary hospital that was brought down to Sri Lanka by the French Government for treatment of patients. He also spoke to the French medical team serving there before their departure back to Colombo Wednesday (29) evening.
