Eternal remembrance of late legendary War Hero, Captain S.W.M Saliya Upul Aladeniya PWV of Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment who had been awarded the highest gallantry medal, 'Parama Weera Vibhushanaya' was made a reality inside the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF) HQ at Kosgama following an initiative taken by Major General D.M.K.D.B Pussella RWP RSP, who was instrumental in initiating the concept.
The corner-stone for construction of a monument for this contemporary hero was laid on Thursday (14) at the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force premises in remembrance of Captain S.W.M Saliya Upul Aladeniya PWV for his Individual acts of gallantry and conspicuous bravery of the most exceptional order in the face of the enemy, performed voluntarily whilst on active service and with no regard to the risk of his own life and security with the objective of safeguarding the lives of his comrades in the camp at Kokavil on 6 June 1990.
Captain S.W.M Saliya Upul Aladeniya PWV SLSR marked the indelible history in becoming the first recipient officer of the 'Parama Weera Vibhushanaya'; the highest military decorations awarded posthumously for his acts of exceptional valour in the Sri Lanka Army. Further, he was posthumously promoted from Second Lieutenant to Captain by two ranks at once for the first time in military history in Sri Lanka in appreciation of his innumerable dedication and sacrifice.
On arrival, the day's chief invitee, Major General D.M.K.D.B Pussella RWP RSP who is instrumental in initiating the noble concept was received by Major General M.T.K.R Silva KSP, SLAVF Deputy Commandant. Later, the Commandant laid the corner-stone and signalled the inauguration of the erection at the auspicious time amid 'Seth Pirith' chanting of the Maha Sangha.
The foundation-stone laying for the monument was conducted in a simple ceremony, attended by Senior Officers who serve at the SLAVF Headquarters.
