The 11th World Military Golf Championship - 2017 (WMGC) under the Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM) with golfers from Bahrain, Canada, Estonia, France, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, USA and Zimbabwe for the first time is now underway allowing golfers to enjoy eight days (12 - 19 November) of tournament play and other events in Sri Lanka thanks to the initiatives taken by Sri Lanka Air Force.
The opening ceremony of the WMGC took place this morning (13) at the Eagle’s Golf Links in China Bay, Trincomalee, headed by Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) as the Chief Guest.
Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, Commander of the Army, together with the Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Air Force Air Vice Marshal Sumangala Dias, members of the Air Force Board of Management and Senior Officers from Tri Forces arrived at Trincomalee to witness this historic event.
The tournament’s first round began Monday (13) afternoon in Trincomalee after a few remarks were made regarding the CISM history and the games.
Sri Lanka participated in the 10th World Military Golf Championship, conducted in the Netherlands in 2016. This is the first time Sri Lanka is hosting a World Military Golf Championship of this magnitude.
Brigadier Nanda Hathurusinghe, Chairman, Army Golf Committee and Head of the Sri Lankan Defence Services’ Mission, together with Corporal P.W.A.D Pushpakumara, Sapper I.P.P.K Ilangarathne and Lance Corporal R.M.A.C Rathnayake representing Sri Lanka Army Golf Committee are participating in the tournament.
The CISM literary translated as the International Military Sports Council is one of the largest multi-disciplinary organizations in the world. CISM is in the practice of organizing various sporting events for the armed forces of its 136 member countries. It is also one of the global sports organizations, in which the largest number of disciplines is represented.
CISM annually organizes over twenty Military World Championships for approximately 30 different sports, continental and regional competitions, the Military World Games and most recently Winter Games and World Cadet Games. CISM also invests very significantly in sport for peace activities and solidarity.
