First Sports Meet for War Heroes' Children Inaugurated

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army, the absolute epitome of concern and care for the sons and daughters of War Hero families attended one more firsts in the Army on Thursday (10), attaching a phenomenal importance to the sports talents of children of War Heroes.

The venue was at Diyagama Mahinda Rajapaksa stadium where some 993 children of War Heroes, either fallen or turned disable or still serving, gathered under the recently-formed umbrella organization of Army children, 'Viru Daru Society'  to display their sports talents and skills.

The three-day (Nov 10,11,12) long Sports Meet, comprised of a large number of track and field events, is to be held under six categories of age i.e. below 9,11,13,15,17 & 19 years of age.

The ceremonial inauguration of the first-ever Sports Meet for War Hero children was performed by the Commander of the Army who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, together with Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, President, Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB) who was the brainchild behind forming Regimental Level ‘Viru Daru Societies’ and the ‘Viru Daru Society’, the parent body.

President, Viru Daru Society Miss Deshani Jayasuriya delivered the welcome address after warmly receiving the Chief Guest and Mrs Jayasuriya on arrival. Soon after, the Chief Guest announced the official declaration of the opening of the games, children of Vir Daru Society made the event colourful with dashing dancing performances which attracted the eyes of all those who were present.

Those track and field events, to be judged by an internationally-renowned panel of judges on sports, will end on November 12, 2011, subsequent to a closing ceremony plus award of shields, medals and prizes to the winners and best performances.

Department of Sports Development with the coordination of the Seva Vanitha Unit of the Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps, organized the mammoth maiden event on the directions given by the SVAB to this effect, and the events are to be contested by all Viru Daru Societies at Regimental levels.

The project, regarded by the newly founded Army Children’s Association, Viru Daru Society at Army Headquarters as the first mammoth assignment of this nature, is aimed at tapping sports skills and born talents of Ranaviru Children of all ages.

A gathering of this nature exclusively for children of War Hero families, some of who have been severely affected due to loss of their beloved fathers, disability prevalent among their beloved parents and various other psychological barriers, would immensely benefit further promotion of understanding, brotherhood and comradeship among children of different Army families.

Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, Senior SVAB officers, Spouses of Army families, Senior Officers and a large gathering of members of Army families attended the inauguration.
