First School of Logistics in the Army Founded; Maiden Course Inaugurated

Sri Lanka Army’s first School of Logistics, designed to groom officers with a sound competence and professionalism in the field of logistics, saw its birth in Trincomalee on Monday (9), adding a new chapter for effective and efficient implementation of the Army’s logistic responsibilities.

Monday’s ceremonial opening of the Army School of Logistics by the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya as Chief Guest on the occasion unifies all other Army training programmes on logistics, being pursued hitherto at Panagoda Army Cantonment and elsewhere.

 Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, unveiling the main signboard of the new School of Logistics and the special commemorative plaque, declared open the training centre, accompanied by Colonel Commandant at the new school, instructors and a host of senior officers, including the Commander, Security Forces Headquarters, East.

Induction of the maiden Junior Officer Logistic Course (JOLC) in the new school commenced minutes after the main official opening with lighting of the traditional oil lamp by the Commander of the Army at the auditorium for lectures.

Lieutenant General Jayasuriya in his inaugural address to the student officers highlighted the importance of being a fully-fledged officer, having mastered the art of efficient and effective performance in accordance with principles of administration and terms of logistics. He further stated that the Army in the future will continue to give prominence to training in logistics as it has immensely contributed to the conduct of Army roles and tasks.

The opening ceremony preceded the hoisting of the Army flag and the flag of the new Army School of Logistics. Commandant at the new school welcomed the Commander and all other invitees.

Logistic courses in the Army cover a wide range of general staff duties, roles and tasks, rules and conventions of communication both verbal and written, principles of administration, functions of logistics at regiment levels, log operations and several other areas of study.  

Meanwhile, the Commander before his exit opened a welfare service complex that has a saloon, tailoring shop, canteen, etc inside the 22 Division Headquarters complex early on Monday (9).

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya on his way back visited the 4 Sri Lanka Armoured Corps battalion headquarters at Clappenberg, Trincomalee. He interacted with the troops serving there and exchanged views on matters of service relevance. A tree sapling was also planted by the Army Chief in the premises before he took leave of them.
