Displaced Civilians Help Search Teams in Meeriyabedda

Despite intermittent weather setbacks and mini-scale mudslides still occurring in the devastated Meeriyabedda-Koslanda area where one of the biggest landslides was reported, Army troops of the Security Force Headquarters - Central (SFHQ-C) as well as Air Force, Police and Civil Defence Force personnel, are untiringly still at work with the support of some civilians who have volunteered.

A group of displaced men, housed at Punagala Relief Centre joined hands together with tri-service personnel Thursday (6) afternoon with the intention of showing exact locations where those affected houses and common buildings stood before the tragedy struck.

Those search teams with directions, shown by those volunteering displaced civilians, succeeded in tracing the decomposed remains of a woman, thus bringing the death toll to 11 by Friday (7). Those remains were taken out from a depth of about 10 - 15 feet of rubble, soaked with water.

By providing information on exact locations, 14 affected men are now assisting the troops and the Police, according to Major General Mano Perera, Commander, SFHQ-C.
