The intervention of the Commanding Officer of 6 Field Regiment Sri Lanka Artillery under the Security Force HQ - West with the timely support given by a philanthropist facilitated the passage of a lonely mother and her physically-handicapped child who remained stranded to a safe place after her landlord evicted the family from their rented home.

After information confirmed that both of them were lying inside the Nittambuwa Public Ground pavilion for days with their belongings, Army troops led by Lieutenant Colonel A.H.M.T Gunarathne, Commanding Officer, 6 Field Regiment of Sri Lanka Artillery approached them and inquired into the miserable plight to find that the woman's mother is living in Poddala area in Galle, but both of them were unable to move there due to absence of fuel and transport.

On Wednesday (6), Mr Nihal, the owner of Nihal Fashion (Pvt) Ltd who is also the Chairman, Nittambuwa Traders' Association in response to the request of Army personnel volunteered to offer a vehicle to take both of them to Galle, provided Army personnel could manage with supply of fuel to the vehicle.

Through Army coordination, the Fuel Station at Nittambuwa finally agreed to sell required fuel to the vehicle that could safely take both mother and child to Galle where their relative is living as dusk fell on Wednesday (6).

The widowed mother with her physically and mentally-retarded child has led a hand to mouth life in the area while living inside a small rented house, but the failure to pay the monthly rent for many months compelled the landlord to evict her and the child, it was revealed.
