Cricket Tournament among Wanni Civil Clubs Draws Huge Crowds

With a view to further fostering sentiments of goodwill and harmony between civil sports clubs and the Security Forces in the Wanni, an Inter Club Cricket Tournament among ten Sports Clubs in the Wanni region got underway during 16 – 18 August on an initiative of the Commander, Security Forces – Wanni (SF–W) Major General Kumudu Perera.

Brigadier Prabath Dematanpitiya, General Officer Commanding (GOC), 56 Division directed his troops to have it organized at the 56 Division Headquarters playground. All cricketers in ten civil clubs played hard for supremacy during two days with hospitality provided by the troops.

The grand final match for the ‘56 Division Challenge Trophy’ was played between Pandara Wanni and Solidy Cricket clubs. After a tough nail-biting encounter between both teams, Solidy Club cricketers emerged Champions in the Inter Club Cricket Tournament – 2018.

The winners were awarded the Trophy during the closing ceremony on Saturday (18), witnessed by a large gathering of Wanni cricket fans. General Officer Commanding (GOC), 56 Division graced the event as the Chief Guest and gave away trophies.

Hydramani Fashion Company, a well-known fashion industry in Vavuniya area sponsored the tournament coordinated by the 561 Brigade Headquarters.

Superintendent of Police III Vavuniya, Divisional Forest Officer Vavuniya, Principals, Regional Sport Officers 563 Brigade Commander, Commanding Officers of under command battalions in the 56 Division, and a large gathering of civilians were present during the awarding ceremony.
