Court Martial Against Army Officer, Nabbed While Attempting Bank Robbery Begins

(Media Release)

The Army officer, Captain A.M.U Samarakoon of 2 (Volunteer) Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps (SLAGSC), who was nabbed while attempting to rob the Kandy National Savings Bank (NSB) branch, disguised as a Muslim lady, is being court martialled in accordance with the provisions of the Army Act.

This is the first time an Army officer, involved in criminal activities in the civil society is being tried before a Court Martial with regard to connected military offences while his civil case, filed by the Police under the Penal Code, is still in progress elsewhere.

Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake has directed the Army Directorate of Legal Services to convene the Court Martial immediately since the Army has zero tolerance towards wrongdoers of the Army who indulge in criminal activities in the civil society. (Ends)
