Commander Visits Karandeniya Army Farm &;amp; MIC Construction Site

Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya en route from the ‘Abimansala -II’ construction site inspection at Wilpitawatta, Kamburupitiya to the capital on Thursday (10), took time off his schedule and visited the 5 Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps (SLAGSC)-run agricultural farm at Karandeniya, Ambalangoda.

The Army-managed fertile farm, rich with varieties of different vegetables was begun several months ago by troops of the 5 SLAGSC as an auxiliary project to coincide with the government’s ongoing island-wide ‘Api Wavamu - Rata Nagamu’ national strategy, meant to make the nation self-sufficient in vegetables and fruits.

Lieutenant General Jayasuriya, taking a personal interest in this regard several months ago, encouraged all island-wide Army formations to use their additional land space inside for this worthy purpose. Accordingly, many formations took to the cultivating practice, including the Karandeniya-based 5 SLAGSC Headquarters.

During his stay at Karandeniya Army farm, the Commander enthusiastically strolled along the yard and saw for himself how vegetable beds and plants have been laid and organized, using carbonic manure at very less cost. A few senior officers, accompanying the Commander, explained him of the latest harvest generating methods and techniques that have been used by soldiers to match up with fast developing new agro-innovations.

During his stay at 5 SLAGSC, he was invited to inaugurate another project for the benefit of soldiers. After lighting the traditional oil lamp and cutting a ribbon, he opened a new billet for soldiers. Unveiling of a plaque at the same occasion added more significance to the event. The building project has been completed using local raw materials that had been found by the troops themselves.

Minutes before his visit to the farm, the Commander responded to an invitation, extended by Major General Prasad Samarasinghe, Colonel Commandant, Military Intelligence Corps (MIC) and visited the construction site of the new MIC Regimental Headquarters at Karandeniya, in close proximity to the 5 SLAGSC premises.

Major General Samarasinghe welcomed the Commander warmly and conducted him round the construction site, now in progress.

Major General S.R Manawaduge, Commander, Security Forces Headquarters-South, Brigadier S. Wanniarachchi, Colonel Commandant, SLAGSC, Brigadier K.A.N.S.K Senadhira, General Officer Commanding 12 Division,  121 Brigade Commander, 5 SLAGSC Commanding Officer and several other senior officers were associated with the Commander’s tour in Karandeniya.
